Why Umpire?

The Umpires Weapon!

The Umpires Weapon!

People play Field Hockey for the enjoyment and sporting achievement, as well as the teamwork that playing the game involves.  Each team member is desperate to win the game that they are taking part in, but sometimes this competitive determination can blind their obedience to the rules of the game.

The role of the Umpire is to allow all participants of the game, including the officials, to enjoy a Hockey match safely and within the laws of the game.  If done in a relaxed and friendly manner, Umpiring can be as enjoyable as playing and allows ex-players to continue to be involved in the game well after they have hung-up their stick and pads.

North Notts HC encourages all of its playing members to learn the Rules of the game and are happy to assist any member in achieving the Level One Umpire Award.  Remember, if you know the rules, you can play the game more easily!

England Hockey Level One Umpire Award

This is the passport to umpire all England Hockey adult club competitions and local / county level leagues.

The Level One Umpire Award is made up of three key parts:

  1. A classroom based presentation of four hours and 30 minutes
  2. A minimum of three practice games
  3. An assessment on a suitable match

The classroom session is tutored by an England Hockey approved tutor and involves considering the umpiring skills required for competitive hockey and a detailed study of the Rules of Hockey.  The practice games are independently organised and candidates have up to two years within which they can complete.  Completion and accreditation is based upon the final part – a successful assessment on a match by a locally approved assessor.

For more information please visit the England Hockey Officiating website.

Umpiring in the East Midlands

The local association for Umpires is the East Midlands Hockey Umpires Association, whose President is Kevin Ronson.  Membership of the Association is open to all umpires within the East Midlands Area, qualified to Level One or above and offers a number of benefits including Insurance Cover and access to umpire coaching and support.
