North Notts Hockey Club has a small community of Level One qualified umpires, whose ranks are bolstered by other members who enjoy helping out with games whenever they can. Sometimes players forget that without two umpires a game of Hockey cannot take place; so North Notts Hockey Club is always keen to encourage any player or member to help by officiating a match, or even gain an official umpires award.
If you are interested in having a go at Umpiring a match, or even completing a Level One Umpires Award Course, please visit the Why Umpire section.
Advice to Players on the Rules and how Umpires Intrepret them
As we all know hockey is a great game, but the rules that govern play can often appear to be quite complex; particularly as the FIH like to change them on a regular basis. The intention of the document attached below is to provide North Notts Hockey Club players with some general advice on the most important aspects of the Rules Of Hockey, so that they have a better understanding of the game and the way that the Umpire interprets them.
- Summary of the Basic Rules of Hockey – a really basic guide to the key rules;
- Discussion of the rule change for “Rule 13 – Procedures for taking penalties”;
- Discussion of “Rule 9 – Conduct of Play: players”, how this is controlled by Umpires using Personal Penalties (Rule 14) and the “Stairway of Control…” and a Rough Guide to Umpires’ Signals;
- A full listing of the most important rules for players (Rule 9, 12 and 13).

Who Needs an Umpire?
As North Notts have teams operating in a variety of different Leagues and competitions across the Midlands it can quite often be difficult to know if the Team Captain is required to provide an umpire. Here is a “rough guide” to the requirements:
Mens 1st Team - MHUA Appointed Neutral Umpires
Mens 2nd / 3rd / 4th / 5th Teams - Each team must provide both umpires for their home games, one of which should be qualified to Level One Umpire Award standard.
Ladies 1st Team – MHUA Appointed Neutral Umpires
Ladies 2nd / 3rd Teams - Each team must provide their own umpire for every game

| Darron Bonser | Glen Workman | Mandy Cotterill |
| Dave Griffin | John Buck | Marc Johnson |

Please feel free to use these “trainee” umpires as much as possible, so they can gain the experience they need to achieve the Level One Award.
