Settling in

Hey all.

Well as many of you may have heard I was granted a 457 temporary business visa in December which allows me to work and live in Australia for the next 4 years.

So, on the 2nd of January I started work at John Roberts Finance as an 'apprentice' finance broker. It's pretty quiet here so in between learning about the industry and how to do finance deals I get to watch the cricket whilst studying and hence I've taken the opportunity to email you all.

Since my last email I continued working as a dish pig at the Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron, we got smashed over the holiday season and I can't tell you how happy I am to finally be out of the kitchen. But it gave me the opportunity to work lots of hours and save up lots of money over the Christmas period. Which was ok as Ashleigh went down to Canberra for 2 weeks to play indoor hockey for ACT as Queensland didn't take a squad.

As for me I've officially retired from indoor as injury has forced me out this season, the team was devastated to lose such a valuable player... NOT! It's a stupid game! I finished off the outdoor season with severe groin pains so I went to see the sports doctor and after an x-ray it was determined that I have 'osteitis pubis' which is an inflammation of the tendons around the pubic bone, its all come around from having crap core strength and flexibility. I've now begun a weekly physio programs working on making me more flexible and giving me greater core strength. Having your groin massaged may seem like an 'extras' package that you'd order from a dodgy massage parlour but let me tell you it's far from it... it thrashes, they don't hold back, some of the techniques they use will make you want to throw up, but hopefully it'll all be worth it and I won't miss too much of the outdoor season. The other alternative is a nasty injection and I don't really want that!

Anyway I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and new year. I still can't get over it being 30+ degrees with clear blue skies on Christmas day. I cooked my very first Christmas dinner and surprised myself by doing a good job with it. For those of you who have ever seen me in the kitchen know its more like a Benny Hill sketch than a work of art - I'm no Jamie Oliver. It was just me and Ash this year as her parents went to Townsville, we had ham and I managed to find Yorkshire Pudding mix and she liked it.

For new years we went up to lake Tinaroo on the Atherton Tablelands (an hour inland from Cairns) here we spent the afternoon driving golf balls onto an island in the lake, driving jet ski's and being towed behind them on rubber rings (biscuits). But we saw in the new year with a massive bonfire (petrol fuelled, it got very hot very quick) and some fireworks. It was good fun and something different from going to the club and getting drunk but never the less I still miss Debdale.

What else.. hmm. oh yes I've been playing a fair bit of poker in the free tournaments in cairns and with Tim's old works mates. I'm getting pretty good, I won $200 before Christmas and made the finals table in one of the free tournaments with over 80 people playing.

Tim has started a new job as a financial planner in town at the same place I failed my interview. He was laid off by Telstra after they closed their Cairns office. He really landed on his feet which was good as he and Michelle have a baby on the way.

Not long till the wet season now this is when we get 3 months of constant torrential rain and it starts to cool down a bit too. We may get a couple of cyclones but hopefully they will be small as Innisfail is still re-building after Larry struck in March.

Find attached pictures from our presentation night back in September, I won best dressed. The theme was Wild Wild West and the club house was decorated with bails of hay and other wild west paraphernalia. We didn't have a speaker, so Nigel volunteered us to do it, it didn't go that great as we were the wrong side of sober..

I'll be updating our website soon, so don't forget to check it out - www.brothershockey.com.au

Well not much more to say now and I suppose I'd better get back to work.

Keep in touch, I miss you all

Taggie
