The Season Finishes

Hey folks, sorry for the long wait between instalments of Taggies Travels, this is due to not much happening and me putting lots of hours in at work.

Well its been nearly a month since Greer left and things have quietened down a lot. I'm still working at the Sea Temple Hotel at Palm Cove and am due to finish there on September 22nd as my 3 months will be up, but as the hotel chain Mirvac owns lots of hotels around the area I can just be transferred to another kitchen.
The work is good as the chefs are all a good bunch of lads so its easy to have a laugh and get on with your work. Plus as England are winning at the cricket so its really funny winding them up, AUSTRALIANS ARE THE WORST LOSERS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD and its great, Tim gets really angry with me too and i know that Greer pushed him to the edge when he was here.

I have bought myself a fishing rod so on my days off I just get some bait and some beers and just go and sit off the pier and try to catch some fish. I'm not very good at the minute but i have managed to catch some tropical fish (see photo album). The other day I was there for an hour, caught nothing then as I reeled in I noticed that a fish (possibly a shark) had eaten my bait, hook, sinker and part of my line. I was not happy so I ate some mardy cake and went home in a bad mood!!!!

The day after Greer left two of the hockey boys Macca and Grunta took me out in their boat into the cairns inlet, this was great fun, I got to sit on the end of the boat laying crab pots in one of the creeks and also keeping an eye out for crocodiles. When the boat got stuck my job as well as to lift the boat was to stand with a knife and if a croc came stab it in the head! I'm scared of insects so the last thing I'm gonna be doing is trying to copy Steve Irwin and grab crocodiles, if I saw one I was goooooooooone!!!!!!  Anyway we didn't catch any crabs big enough to take home so I had an idea which was to go around other
peoples pots when there went looking and pinch what they had caught, jump in the boat and speed away as quick as possible, this piece of woodhouse initiative worked a treat as we got 1 crab yay!! After this we went out further into the inlet and I caught 1 Toadfish and 2 Grunter fish - ladies and gentlemen I was on fire hehe!

Apart from the fishing and work I was invited to Macca's 18th at the Brothers club house, this was good fun as I got to meet some of the other players from different teams in Cairns and have a good chat about hockey in the UK and Australia. Towards the end of this night some abbo's tuned up and a massive fight of about 200 people broke out on the playing fields, this was funny seeing all these kids laying into each other so I propped my deck chair up against the wall, sat down with a rum and enjoyed the show before the police came. It was a case of kids with too much alcohol. It kind of reminded me of the footballers at Debdale who think they're god's gift but then can't take their alcohol and just get leery and think they're some kind of man!!! Thank god hockey people aren't like that!!!!

The curse of the Nova strikes again, on my way back from work the exhaust on the Civic fell off, I don't know people what it is but every car I've ever owned has fallen to pieces on me, I must be cursed or something! So the next morning I rang around a few exhaust companies and decided to go for the one with the best name - Tuff Muff hehe, they did me the job for $200 and kindly stuck a sticker on the back of my car so I now drive around with Tuff Muff plastered on the back of my car!!!

Last week a really really really big spider wandered into the living room, now I'm not the best person around creepy crawlies but this spider was big and he looked hard too as he had 2 legs missing so he'd been scrapping with a dog or something. However I had to wait 3 hours for Tim to get home before I could leave the chair. Look at the picture - SCARY EH!!!!

Well the season here has all but finished, there's the grand finals this weekend but none of our teams are in any of them. In Classics we came last but we had a very young squad (I'm the 4th oldest) and in reserve grade we lost in the semi finals, I was meant to play that game but the nice people at the CHA decided to bring in some new rules which meant I couldn't play.  Seriously guys there are so many rules and regulations here that it takes the fun out of hockey, we have lost so many points because of the teams we have named and especially for the younger kids in reserves who have worked hard all season only to see points taken off because the CHA made a new rule and waited 3 weeks to notify us so we lost 3 weeks worth of points and the only team in the competition not to lose points is the team whose member is also the CHA president - it all smells like bulls**t to me!!!!

The semi finals weren't much better as we had a goal disallowed whilst we were 2-1 down by the umpire who was a member of the opposition team. He ran 55m to tell the other umpire to overturn his goal decision.  This has been a very disappointing end to a good season.

So now hockey for me this year in Australia is now over and I'd just like to thank everybody at Brothers Fury Hockey Club for looking after me and making me feel welcome. I've loved every minute of this season and learnt so much, my confidence has grown and understanding of how to get the best out of my abilities has increased.

So I'll leave you with a team photo from this year!

Live the dream
